Dear Year 5/6 Parents,
In response to some concerns raised by pupils and parents relating to the inappropriate use of social networking apps, PCSO James Down met with both year groups yesterday, on Thursday 25th March.
The purpose of this extraordinary assembly was to reassure the children that social networking can be, and mainly is, a very positive experience. He also informed the children that the legal age for using most of these apps is 13+ years old.
Again, this was not said to stop the children from using the social networks but to encourage them to keep you, as parents, informed about the apps they are using.
The children mainly talked about Instagram, Snapchat, Whatsapp and Facebook - PCSO James was concerned when 'Whisper' app was mentioned due to the inappropriate content and the way in which it works (sends images and captions to people in a given radius). Children have been encouraged to delete this app if they have it.
The children were given a really good way of considering what they are about to send to someone:
-Would you like your Gran to see it?
-How would you feel if you received it?
They were all reminded that anything sent via a computer or mobile device is 'out there' forever and that future employers now look on-line for digital footprints of potential employees.
The children have been asked to share their apps with you and teach you about them - in return you will be able to support your child if they ever have a bad experience with social networking.
Please feel free to come and talk to us about any social networking concerns... we have recently held a social networking safety parents evening but we are happy to organise more information/support if you request this.
Thank you for your support... and please remember that ICT is seen as a very positive communication tool but one that children need guidance to ensure their safety is paramount.
Claire, Angie & Debbie
