Geography Intent

At Giles Brook School we want to inspire children to ‘think like a geographer’ and have a lifelong curiosity about the world and understand their place in it.

Our children will develop their geographical knowledge about a diversity of places and the world’s landforms, alongside having a growing understanding of geographical concepts, terms and vocabulary.

They will explore the interactions between humans and their environments, this will teach them their responsibilities and develop the children’s appreciation for caring for the World.

The development of fieldwork skills across the year groups will help the children gain a thorough knowledge of their locality including our school grounds and compare this with other areas of the world. Pupil voice is very important to our school and children are encouraged to be explorative thinkers and ask their own perceptive questions, collect and record their data and present their own findings in various ways. These skills are transferable throughout our curriculum.

Our scheme encourages:

  • A strong focus on developing both geographical skills and knowledge.
  • Critical thinking, with the ability to ask perceptive questions and explain and analyse evidence.
  • The development of fieldwork skills across each year group.
  • A deep interest and knowledge of pupils’ locality and how it differs from other areas of the world.
  • A growing understanding of geographical concepts, terms and vocabulary.

Kapow’s Primary Geography scheme of work enables children to meet the end of key stage attainment targets in the National Curriculum. In our early years curriculum the Kapow activities allow children to meet their end of year milestones. As a school we also subscribe to the Geographical Association to support our knowledge, understanding and development of the subject.

Our Park Rangers and Eco-School Council encourages pupil voice which in turn supports growth mindsets and self esteem. The children really show their passion for the subject and make sure important aspects are effectively communicated to others and are acted upon in assemblies, with governors, staff and the community to address and develop areas of the school and local area. These roles prepare children to be responsible individuals for the future.

Through our geography curriculum we hope to give children a strong understanding and knowledge of the world and enable them to have an active role in looking after it.
